Certification Program Overview

Teams that adopt Optimizely One get the most value when every member — from content editors to platform architects — understands the capabilities available to them and knows how to apply those capabilities to real business problems. Certification gives you a structured way to prove that understanding, earn recognition, and stay current as the platform evolves.

The Optimizely Certification Program is designed around three principles: validate practical skill (not rote memorization), cover every product in the Optimizely One suite, and keep credentials current through lightweight annual renewal.

The program is organized along three axes: tiers (depth), roles (perspective), and tracks (product focus).

  • 3 Tiers — Foundation, Core, Advanced
  • 5 Roles — Practitioner, Strategist, Solutions Architect, Developer, Administrator
  • 17 Tracks — one per product area (CMS SaaS, CMS PaaS, Web Experimentation, Feature Experimentation, Configured Commerce, ODP, and more)
  • 65 Certifications — the full matrix of tiers, roles, and tracks

Each tier represents a depth of expertise. You progress through them sequentially within a track.

TierFocusExam formatTypical preparation
FoundationConcepts and terminology40 scenario-based MCQs, 60 minutesSelf-paced learning path (4-6 hours)
CoreApplied skills and configuration30 MCQs + 2 code/config tasks + 1 written rationale, 90 minutesGuided learning path + hands-on lab (12-20 hours)
AdvancedArchitecture, optimization, edge cases20 MCQs + 3 code tasks + 2 written rationales, 120 minutesProject experience + advanced learning path (30+ hours)

Every exam uses a blend of three question types:

  1. Scenario-based MCQ — You read a realistic business or technical scenario and select the best answer. Questions test judgment, not recall.
  2. Code / configuration task — You write or modify code, configuration, or query definitions in a sandboxed environment. Core and Advanced tiers only.
  3. Written rationale — You explain your reasoning for a design decision in 100-200 words. Core and Advanced tiers only.

Foundation is a single cross-product exam that every learner takes first. Core and Advanced certifications are product-specific and role-specific.

Each Core and Advanced exam is further segmented by role — for example, CMS SaaS Core (Developer) and CMS SaaS Core (Practitioner) are separate credentials with different questions.

Certifications are designed for five distinct roles. Each role emphasizes different skills and sees different exam questions, even within the same track and tier.

RoleWho this is forAssessment emphasis
PractitionerEnd users, marketers, content editorsDay-to-day platform usage, workflow configuration
StrategistDigital strategists, CSMs, consultantsBusiness outcomes, scenario-based decisions
Solutions ArchitectPlatform architects, pre-sales engineersIntegration patterns, system design
DeveloperFront-end and back-end engineersCode implementation, API usage
AdministratorIT admins, platform ownersPlatform configuration, security, operations

When you earn multiple certifications, you unlock meta-credentials that recognize breadth and depth of expertise.

Meta-credentialRequirementsWhat it signals
ChampionCore cert in 2+ distinct products (post-Foundation, excl. mini-certs)Cross-product understanding
MasterCore cert in 4+ distinct productsOperates across the majority of the Optimizely portfolio

Optimizely partners earn organizational tier recognition based on their team’s collective certifications.

Gold10 Core certifications spanning 2 or more products
PlatinumGold requirements + 5 Advanced certifications

Partner tiers unlock co-marketing opportunities, priority support, and access to pre-release features.

If you hold a certification from the previous Optimizely certification program, you may be eligible for the Bridge Program. A bridge code unlocks a shortened conversion exam so you can validate your expertise in the new framework without repeating material you’ve already mastered.

  • Your Optimizely representative or partner manager can provide a bridge code
  • Enter the bridge code when prompted on the exam lobby — it applies to Foundation, Core, or Advanced exams
  • Where an exam has a prerequisite (Core and Advanced), the bridge code also waives that prerequisite
  • The bridge exam is shorter than the standard exam:
    • Core and Advanced bridge exams skip multiple choice entirely — you complete only the scenario and rationale, and are scored on those alone
    • Foundation bridge exams use a reduced set of multiple-choice questions
  • Passing awards a standard certification, identical to one earned through the normal path
  • Because a bridge exam is shorter and scored differently, its score is excluded from the leaderboard rankings (the credential still counts)

This program ensures that experienced Optimizely practitioners can quickly validate their expertise in the new framework without repeating foundational material they have already mastered.

Certifications are valid for one year. Renewal uses a delta-only format: you answer questions that cover only what changed since your last certification or renewal. This keeps credentials current without requiring you to re-prove knowledge you have already demonstrated.

  • Renewal exams are 15-20 questions and take approximately 30 minutes.
  • If a product area had no significant changes, the renewal exam is shorter.
  • Failing a renewal exam does not revoke your certification immediately — you have a 30-day grace period to retake it.
  1. Choose your role — Start with the role page that matches your job function.
  2. Pick a track — Select the product area most relevant to your work.
  3. Begin at Foundation — Every track starts with a Foundation certification. Complete the learning path, then take the exam.
  4. Progress to Core — After earning Foundation, the Core learning path and exam become available.
  5. Reach Advanced — Core holders can pursue Advanced certification when they are ready.
