Get Started with Opal
Why setup matters
Section titled “Why setup matters”Opal activates automatically for eligible organizations, but it does not work out of the box. Administrators must assign roles and connect product instances before anyone on the team can interact with it. Skipping these steps means your team sees a grayed-out icon or no Opal option at all.
This guide walks through setup for each role: administrator, agent builder, and user.
For administrators
Section titled “For administrators”You control who can access Opal and what they can do with it.
Assign Opal roles
Section titled “Assign Opal roles”Open the Opti ID Admin Center and assign one of three roles to each team member:
| Role | Permissions |
|---|---|
| Opal Administrator | Full management: user administration, instruction creation, tool configuration, agent setup, product instance connections |
| Agent Builder | Create instructions, develop agents, access the Agent Directory. Receives Opal User permissions if the plan does not support the full role. |
| Opal User | Access Opal features within connected Optimizely products |
Custom roles are available if the standard options do not match your organization’s structure.
Connect product instances
Section titled “Connect product instances”Opal needs access to your Optimizely products to perform tasks within them.
- Open the Opal app from the product switcher at home.optimizely.com
- Navigate to Settings > Product Connections
- Connect each Optimizely product instance your team uses
- Verify the connections are active
Without product connections, Opal cannot create campaigns, access analytics, or interact with your content.
Configure chat settings
Section titled “Configure chat settings”Adjust how Opal responds to fit your team’s needs:
- Inference level — Choose between Quick (simple tasks), Complex (advanced analysis), and Pro (nuanced challenges)
- Code mode — Enable for technical output like code snippets and configuration examples
- RAG — Enable retrieval-augmented generation to enrich responses with your organization’s content data
Enable for non-Opti ID users
Section titled “Enable for non-Opti ID users”Organizations not yet on Opti ID can pilot Opal by having their technical contact (Super Admin) grant access:
- Navigate to Admin Center > Users
- Locate or invite the user (enter email, first name, last name)
- Click Add Product Access and select Opal as the product
- Choose the appropriate role
- Confirm and send the invitation
Security considerations
Section titled “Security considerations”If your organization uses a firewall that blocks Opal URL scanning, add these IP addresses to your allowlist:
34.173.58.195 · 34.45.81.146 · 34.58.63.97 · 34.63.7.24 · 34.70.231.38 · 35.202.230.252
Confirm changes with your network or security team. Apply these IPs only to environments that require scanning and review the allowlist periodically.
Opal can be disabled entirely through Admin Center > Settings > Generative AI, though re-enablement requires contacting Optimizely Support.
Set the email domain
Section titled “Set the email domain”If your workflows use the send_email tool or email-triggered workflow agents, configure the email subdomain prefix in Settings. This prefix determines the sender address for Opal-sent messages.
Important: Once set, the email domain cannot be changed. Use lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens only (minimum two characters, no leading or trailing hyphens).
