Optimizely Foundations Certification

beginner
📜Foundation

The Optimizely Foundations certification is the universal starting point for every certification path. It is a single, cross-product exam that validates your understanding of the entire Optimizely ecosystem — what each product does, when to use it, how products work together, and the shared terminology used across the platform.

Every candidate starts here, regardless of role or product focus. Passing Foundation is required before attempting any Core certification.

The Foundation exam covers five cross-product domains:

DomainWeightWhat it covers
Product Awareness25%What products does Optimizely offer? Core capabilities, positioning, and differentiation between products.
Use-Case Matching25%Given a business scenario, which Optimizely product or combination of products is the right fit?
Platform Navigation20%DXP concepts, shared terminology, common UI patterns, and how to find things across products.
Ecosystem Overview15%How products connect — data flow between CMS, experimentation, ODP, commerce, and content marketing.
Shared Terminology15%Cross-product vocabulary — visitors, segments, content types, experiments, campaigns, audiences, events.

Foundation questions test recall and understanding (Bloom’s taxonomy levels 1–2). You will not be asked to write code, design architecture, or solve complex scenarios. Instead, expect questions like:

  • “Which Optimizely product would you use to run A/B tests on a website?”
  • “What is the primary purpose of ODP in the Optimizely ecosystem?”
  • “A B2B company needs complex pricing rules and approval workflows. Which commerce product fits best?”
  1. Read the product overview pages for each Optimizely product in the documentation portal
  2. Understand the product matrix — know what each product does and doesn’t do
  3. Review integration patterns — how CMS connects to experimentation, how ODP feeds personalization
  4. Take the practice exam — available from the exam catalog once the exam is active

Passing Foundation unlocks all Core certifications across every product track. Your next step depends on your role:

  • Practitioners — start with the products you use daily (CMS SaaS, Web Experimentation, CMP)
  • Developers — pursue Core certs in products you build with (CMS SaaS/PaaS, Feature Experimentation)
  • Strategists — focus on experimentation and data products (Web Experimentation, ODP, Analytics)
  • Solutions Architects — target integration-heavy tracks (CMS, Commerce, ODP, Graph)
  • Administrators — certify in products you manage (CMS, Commerce, CMP, ODP)
